The management of design is the management of process and people. Every professional organisation proclaims their team as their greatest asset. Industry benchmarking reveals that employees are over 50% of operating costs. Effective management is a key to higher productivity and sustainability, but the structure of a team, its complimentary skill-set and capability to work together that produces the best results.
One of my MBA projects was to research employee job satisfaction in architecture firms. The single greatest dissatisfaction was not remuneration ~ it was “re-work”. Employees hate redoing any task through no fault of their own; particularly design changes generated internally, but also changes by the client or other project participants. Coincidentally changes are rarely accompanied by additional fees so reducing rework has many benefits.
Role clarity was another concern which often related to delegation skills.
